DEVELOPING YOUR BRUSH STROKES AND TECHNIQUES

Unlock your creative potential with Helen Alice Johnson, a professional artist and experienced art teacher, who will guide you through a fun, relaxed, and pressure-free online painting experience. Whether you're a complete beginner, aspiring amateur, or a fellow professional, this one off session will help you develop your skills in using one brush to create many marks from the comfort of your home. You’ll have the freedom to explore your creativity, express yourself within a structured framework, and begin to develop an experienced confidence in the use of the brush

Helen, a former headteacher and professional artist, provides expert guidance. OFSTED once praised her leadership: "The key to the centre’s overall improvement is the headteacher’s firm leadership and her skill in inspiring, encouraging, and working with the staff."

Session Breakdown:

In this session, we will

• Touch on the different types of brush for different uses

• work in sketchbooks/ on paper to learn how to:

  •  Focus on one type of brush and what it can do

  •  Get the best out of one brush for many uses

By the end of the session, you will have learnt some of the skills that are essential to creating paintings.

We will achieve this by practicing a range of techniques, shapes and brush strokes that will give you the confidence to tackle future paintings more successfully.

The session will last about one hour and is pre-recorded so you can stop, pause, rewind etc as many times as you like.

Whether you are learning a brand-new skill, or honing your previous skills, this session is relaxing as well as informative, and the act of making marks has a beautiful therapeutic quality that I recommend!

The materials and equipment needed are small and portable, so you can literally take them anywhere. At the side of a desk to catch a few minutes during a coffee break, or sat in front of the fire whilst watching TV!

Once you have watched the session, you will be liberated to practice on your own whenever you can.

Product Features:

  • One off pre-recorded session that you can replay as often as you like.

  • Yours to keep for a lifetime

  • Medium: Water based ink and watercolour paper

  • Style: Practice of brush techniques

Materials needed:

I list below the materials and equipment I use in the session, but you are free to choose your own, or if you already have materials etc.

I would advise however, that wherever possible, you use a watercolour paper over cheaper papers, as the effects of the paint will be much more appealing and easier for you to handle.

If you buy the Koh-I-Noor ink palette, they offer a larger round palette with a greater range of colours. However, in my opinion the best colours are in the smaller palette shown, so no need to splash out on the larger one!

I have used Amazon as my search, but obviously other providers are available!

  • Water colour Paper/ sketchbook. This is the one I use in the session:

Vienrose Watercolour Journals Sketchbooks Cotton Paper Cold Press Watercolour Journals Notebook Suitable for Techniques and Mixed Media 21×14 cm

Inks – we will only be using one colour so if you have an ink already feel free to use this instead.

KOH - I - NOOR Anilinky 12 Colour pan set

Brushes – various sizes but one MUST be a flat edged brush, ideally size 8 or 10

Amazon Basics Art Paint Brush Set, Different Sizes for Artists, Adults & Kids, 10 Count, Blue

    Water waterpot

    Kitchen roll

Pencil and sharpener (any pencil will do)

    Ruler or straight edge

Pair of compasses or some round things to draw around – not too big!
