From My Studio: Exploring Helen Alice Johnson’s Creative Process

Each week, Helen Alice Johnson takes inspiration from the natural world that surrounds her in Alston, Cumbria. Her paintings reflect the landscapes, gardens, and changing seasons, offering viewers a glimpse into the beauty of nature. In this blog, Helen shares the moments that spark her creativity, from a walk in the countryside to the sight of a flower blooming in her garden.

From Cow Green Reservoir to Chartres Cathedral

If you’re interested in the painting process - my video blog is definitely for you this week! I have been flat out painting and now have three unfinished canvases on the go!

Which is super exciting because that means I will have three new paintings that will all be revealed for the first time at the Dennis Kilgallon Gallery from 6th July to 25th August.

This one above is the second painting I have made inspired by Cow Green Reservoir - as yet unfinished - I have some unresolved issues with the reservoir itself and then some details to add to finish it off, but it will definitely be ready for the 6th July!

Larger than the first one  this one is 80cm x 129cm and the Lapwing sits on the Golden Section. It will be for sale for the bargain price of £1050 so make sure you save the date to see it before it gets snapped up!

If you can’t make my exhibition at the Dennis Kilgallon Gallery don’t worry - we will be opening up The Old Police Station again for Open Studio Art Sale for 24th, 25th and 26th August for the Bank Holiday

And if you are in the South of England, The Old Cinema stock a range of my paintings and have even more online.

Giverny and Chartres

In Northern France in June, it would be remiss of me not to visit the beautiful gardens of Giverny - home of Claude Monet and the site of his famous Waterlily paintings. And as this is so close to Chartres, one of my favourite places in France, I went seeking inspiration from the beautiful stained glass at Chartres Cathedral. This inspiration will be used for my next two paintings at least, which will be shown at the Dennis Kilgallon Gallery NE47 8JP from 6th July to 25th August

The UDO Collection Launch

This week saw us attend the launch of The UDO Collection 4 way dress at Gigi’s Dressing Room. I was invited to be the Special Guest at this amazing event and loved every minute of it.

One of the best things about being an artist is meeting so many amazing people and I have lost count of the fantastic conversations I have had this week alone with people from all over the world either in my studio in Cumbria or in Gigi’s Dressing Room in Walthamstow!

A collection of my medium sized River paintings is now on show at Finntage, The Old Cinema (first floor) and a collection of smaller works will be on show at Gigi’s Dressing Room for this week only - so call in and check them out if you can.

Prints are available on any of my paintings, including the sold ones, so if you really loved Reflections Beyond - you can still order a print - or of any of my other paintings, don’t hesitate to get in touch. Check out my website for all my paintings, either sold or still available as originals.

AND MORE SUPER EXCITING NEWS!

I am currently in talks with a gallery in Wokingham who are interested in representing me as an artist. The R Young Gallery, which I was introduced to at the Landmark Arts Fair in Teddington. I’ll keep you updated on how this develops throughout the summer.

Landmark Arts Fair

Find us this week at the fabulous Landmark Arts Centre for the Landmark Spring Arts Fair in Teddington, London. We are on stall 67 with a range of my original paintings, from the largest down to the smallest, so lots of affordable art. There are also many other fantastic artists and makers here so really is something for everyone. Please come along if you can. But this isn't where we started the week - in fact, we began our art journey this week literally in another country - with a trip to beautiful Scotland - specifically Kirkudbright in the South West of Scotland. Known as an artist's town, Kirkudbright has an inspirational bay and I spent the morning painting en plein air in Jock Bay, working in my sketchbook in readiness for my next painting of 2024.

We Are All Made Of Stars

We Are All Made Of Stars - Oil on canvas. I'm delighted to announce that the oil painting of Ullswater in the Lake District is complete and I think it’s absolutely breath-taking! The beautiful blend of pattern and landscape, which is neither abstract nor representational, creates a unique aesthetic. Stay tuned for more of such captivating work in the upcoming months!
