Van Gogh Art Tour | A Trip to the South of France
This week, I had the privilege of stepping away from my studio and embarking on an inspiring art journey to the South of France, where the legacy of Vincent Van Gogh is still vividly present. The picturesque landscapes, vibrant colours, and historic architecture of Arles have long captivated artists, and it’s easy to see why Van Gogh was drawn here. The influence of his time in Arles can be seen everywhere – from the iconic "Yellow House" to the cobbled streets and vibrant cafés that line the town.
Following in Van Gogh’s Footsteps
On this Van Gogh Art Tour, I visited some of the most significant locations where Van Gogh lived and created his masterpieces. One of the most memorable stops was the site of the "Yellow House," where Van Gogh lived with fellow artist Paul Gauguin. Though the house was damaged during World War II, standing on that spot filled me with a sense of artistic connection, imagining Van Gogh’s view as he painted.
For any art lover, it’s impossible to walk through Arles without feeling Van Gogh’s presence in the architecture and landscapes that inspired him. Whether it’s "The Café Terrace at Night" or "Starry Night Over the Rhône," every street and building seems to hold a story, waiting to be told through the brushstrokes of an artist’s hand.
The Artistic Heritage of Roman Arles
But Van Gogh wasn't the only one to be inspired by this region. Long before his time, the Romans also found beauty in this part of the world, and their influence can still be seen today. One of the highlights of the tour was visiting the Roman amphitheatre in Arles, a stunning structure where Van Gogh captured his painting, "Spectators in the Arena at Arles." The grandeur of this ancient architecture, combined with the delicate light of the South of France, provided endless inspiration, and I found myself deeply moved by the confluence of art and history.
Colours and Light – A Painter’s Dream
What truly sets the South of France apart is the incredible light and colour that permeate the landscape. From the soft pastels of the buildings to the golden sunlight that seems to warm every stone, the environment here is a painter’s dream. I couldn’t resist bringing some of that magic back to my own canvas, and I’ve already begun working on new pieces inspired by the vibrant hues and natural beauty of Arles.
One of my particular favourites is the painting "Café Terrace at Night." Seeing the café in person, with its bright lights and lively atmosphere, was like stepping into one of Van Gogh’s paintings. I hope to bring some of that same energy and vibrancy into my own work.
